A Time for the Environment

The Metropolitan Naga Water District (MNWD) joined the Naga City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) for a Clean-up Drive in celebration of Earth Day 2018 conducted last April 21, 2018 at the upstream area of Mangga Creek covering the areas of Barangays Dayangdang and Balatas, Naga City.

What started as a modern environmental movement back in April 22, 1970, Earth Day is now a global event being observed by more than 190 countries with the purpose to effect change and consciousness in saving Mother Earth.

With the theme “End Plastic Pollution,” the objectives of this year’s activity is to change human attitude and behavior about the use of plastic and catalyze reduction in plastic pollution.

As stewards of the environment, the MNWD participated in the Clean-up Drive together with LGU Naga, city youth, and representatives from other agencies.

Prior to the Earth Day celebration, MNWD also participated in the Earth Hour held last March 24, 2018 organized by the same office.

Earth Hour is an annual worldwide event led by World Wild Fund (WWF) which started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia back in 2007. Since then, more than 180 countries and territories including the Philippines engage in the celebration.

With this year’s theme “10 years of Using our Power to Save our Living Planet,” the City ENRO organized these activities:

  1. Rock the Earth Jam with Local Bands at SM Grounds
  2. Two-Part Zumba at Plaza Rizal and SM Mall
  3. Advocacy Walk at Plaza Quezon to SM Mall
  4. Night Fun Bike Event at SM Mall
  5. Night Run at Robinson’s Place Naga, and
  6. Pre and Earth Hour synchronized activities and presentation at SM and Robinson’s Grounds

Relative to the said occasion, the MNWD set-up two (2) hydration stations at Robinson’s Place and Naga City Rotonda, Panganiban respectively, in support of the Earth Hour celebration particularly to those who joined the Night Fun Bike and Night Run events.

Earth Day and Earth Hour have become very effective in spreading environmental consciousness. With the gradual depletion of our natural resources, these occasions remind us to take political, institutional, and civic participation towards saving our planet. (Auria S. Gonzales)
